I encourage you to begin your wellness practice now. Be an advocate for physical therapy and let your community know you have something unique to offer anyone who wants to embark on a wellness/fitness program, especially if that person has any orthopedic or medical condition.
We need to move quickly into the wellness arena and let the public know they can go to a PT for wellness/fitness services. We need to tell them that PTs have the expertise and strong medical background needed to develop wellness/fitness programs that are safe, effective, and address unique and individual health needs. We also need to let the medical community know we now offer these services.
I recently got a very slick promotional piece in the mail advertising the “IDEA Personal Trainer Summit” in San Diego. When I looked inside I found what to me was very disturbing a course designed by physical therapists for personal trainers titled “Personal Trainer Post-Rehabilitation Track.” Check out the first paragraphs: “This track will help you gain skills so you can work in the growing area of post-rehab. Focus on the kinematics of major joints as it applies to common orthopedic diagnoses that you may encounter in your scope of practice.
Participate in hands-on labs designed for you to practice techniques that can be used for post-rehab clients. … The labs will be taught and supervised by physical therapists from Physiotherapy Associates.” The trainers are aggressively going after the growing market of people who are being discharged (meaning their insurance will no longer reimburse for care) earlier and earlier from the hospital and physical therapy. In the recent past, these people would have worked longer with a Physical Therapist. Now they are out on the street and the “fitness professionals” are in hot pursuit. To find out more about this organization check out their web site at www.IDEAfit.com or call 800-999-4332.
If you care about people and really want to help them, you need to do something now to let your community know that you, as a physical therapy professional, can offer more, that you are the “best-choice” as a wellness/fitness consultant. You have the education and skills to really help people develop personal fitness programs that will be safe and effective. Give the public the choice of a PT for post-rehab fitness. Make yourself available. Do it because you care!
